The Artisan and their Craft
Ervin Somogyi is considered the greatest steel string guitar maker living today. When he decided to write a 2-volume anthology of the his work, he commissioned Studio Galli Productions to produce a film that would demonstrate his ability as a master Luthier. We invited Windham Hill/Sony Records recording artist Steve Arquiaga into the studio to perform some original music Steve wrote to be played on a Somogyi guitar.
How often do we acknowledge the final result of a textile or musical instrument being played, and yet know little or nothing about the maker. We visit a museum and see an incredible textile, but little is known about the 'faceless and nameless' maker of the exquisite art.
The film "The Responsive Guitar" was an effort to bring the Artisan into view while he worked; to show the relationship between the maker as well as the outcome. We cross-faded the video of the maker and performer throughout the product to show that bond that forms as the wood is shaped first by the hands of the maker and subsequently by the hands of the performance artist. "The Responsive Guitar" has been viewed 100,000 on various Youtube channels and continues to inspire new generations of guitar makers as well as musicians who dream of owning a Somogyi guitar. .
Excellence in Technology and Education
Technology is constantly changing and the world of video is no exception. While we were once regulated to producing DVDs, we now offer higher definition (up to 16X) video by streaming to a global audience.
Our learners now join us from Norway to India, from Alaska to Spain as they embark on a course of learning with one of our online workshops.
When we produce workshops, our goal has always been to create experiences that bring the learner or viewer into the room as if they were participating in a live event or workshop. As we move forward we will continue to strike a balance between excellence in technology and affordable education education.
Finally, while archival documentary shorts were once a minor element of the work at Studio Galli, it is becoming more of a part of our core business. We recently completed two films for the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, shot on location in Bali and Java, Indonesia. These 5-10 minute shorts provide quality exposure into the world of indigenous artisan craft as seen through the eyes of the maker. Our goal is to continue offering more free educational video along-side our workshops to reach a global audience who now use the internet as a basis for their understanding and education.
